J.J. is a biohacker, artist, and researcher consistently blurring the line between art and science. She is a graduate of NYU, Harvard, Oxford, and London’s Saint Martins with advanced degrees in Biology, Fine Art, and Bioinformatics. She’s been a biohacker for over a decade, and her artwork has been exhibited around the world. In recent years J.J. has turned much of her attention to analog space missions, through which she conducts social, psychological, and scientific experiments that will pave the way for human missions to Mars and beyond.

In this installment of the Future Grind podcast host Ryan O’Shea discusses the concept of liquid democracy, or democracy 3.0, with David Ernst. David is an entrepreneur and technologist advocating for and working to build the infrastructure to support liquid democracy, which is a combination of direct and representative democracy in which voters can choose to directly vote on legislation, or can delegate their vote on any issue to someone who they feel is more capable or qualified to make those decisions. David’s current major project is Secure Internet Voting, or SIV, which promises to offer fast, private, and verifiable internet voting. He also runs Democracy Space and hosts the Liquid Future podcast, which explores Democracy 3.0 and other visions for the future of government and society.

They discuss how liquid democracy can be implemented today with no changes to law, the failures of partisanship, the possibility of AI making political decisions, and much more.

In this installment of the Future Grind podcast host Ryan O’Shea sits down with well known data liberation advocate Hugo Campos. Hugo lives with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, or ICD, which monitors his heart and helps keep him alive. However, the lack of transparency coming from the medical community about his device and the data it collects has lead Hugo on decade plus mission to advocate for data liberation and patient engagement. Hugo has been honored as a White House Champion of Change for Precision Medicine by President Barack Obama, and works with Stanford Medicine X, which is Stanford's premier program on emerging technology and medicine, focusing on patient-centered innovation. Hugo has also shared his story in a TEDx talk at Harvard in 2011.

Today Hugo is a participant ambassador for the All of Us Research Program, an initiative from the NIH focused on building a diverse health database featuring over 1 million participants which will drive future scientific and medical breakthroughs.

In this installment of the Future Grind podcast host Ryan O’Shea speaks with Nell Watson, an entrepreneur and machine intelligence researcher whose work primarily focuses on protecting human rights and creating ethical AI. She currently serves as AI Faculty at Singularity University and works with the IEEE on AI initiatives. In this installment of the Future Grind podcast, host Ryan O’Shea speaks with Dr. Anders Sandberg. Anders is currently a research fellow with the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on global catastrophic risk, cognitive enhancement, collective intelligence, neuroethics, public policy, and much more. Anders serves as an advisor to Humanity Plus, and has a background in computer science, neuroscience and medical engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in computational neuroscience, which focused on neural network modeling of human memory, from Stockholm University in Sweden, which is the country he is originally from.

In this wide ranging conversation they discuss existential risks, the possibility of alien life, the vulnerable world hypothesis, and much more.

In this installment of the Future Grind podcast host Ryan O’Shea speaks with Amanda Plimpton, the Chief Operations Officer for Livestock Labs. Livestock Labs is a tech startup that is creating implantable devices to track the health and wellness of cattle. In this installment of the Future Grind podcast, host Ryan O’Shea speaks with Anna Bethke, the head of AI for Social Good at Intel. In this role she is responsible for establishing partnerships with social impact organizations, and for using Intel’s technologies and artificial intelligence to help them achieve their goals. She is also actively involved in the AI ethics discussion and collaborates on research surrounding the design of fair, transparent, ethical, and accessible AI systems. In her previous role she developed deep learning natural language processing algorithms as a deep learning data scientist at the Intel AI Lab. Anna received degrees in Aerospace Engineering from MIT and previously worked as a data scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and more.

They discuss what AI and AI for Good even means, bias and AI ethics, available resources, and more.

This unit falls within the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, and is focused on identifying existing and emerging biological threats, and ultimately on preventing acts of bio-terrorism. David was one of the early pioneers of the smartphone industry, and in 1998 he co-founded Symbian and worked to launch their mobile operating system, which was used by Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, and more. Today David serves as Chair of the London Futurists, which hosts educational events dedicated to exploring the potential upsides, and the potential downsides of accelerating technologies. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Humanity Plus, a nonprofit dedicated to elevating the human condition. David has been included in T3 magazine’s list of the ”100 most influential people in technology”, and has authored or edited 8 books including his latest, Sustainable Superabundance: A Universal Transhumanist Invitation.

They discuss David’s background as a pioneer in the smartphone industry, the future of politics and how tribalism and vitriol can be overcome, and the path towards superabundance.

In this installment of the Future Grind podcast host Ryan O’Shea sits down with Natasha Vita-More, Ph.D. Natasha has done a lot - she’s an artist, designer, author, and speaker. She is co-editor of The Transhumanist Reader: Classical and Contemporary Essays on the Science, Technology and Philosophy of the Human Future, and is the author of the brand new book TRANSHUMANISM: What is it?. In 2015 she served as the lead scientist on published research into the memory retention of C. elegans nematodes after cryopreservation, which could have important implications for cryonics. Natasha currently serves as a professor at the University of Advancing Technology, as well as the Executive Director of Humanity Plus, a nonprofit organization which advocates for the ethical use of emerging technologies to improve human capabilities, and one which Ryan is also involved with.

They discuss Natasha’s background and her path to transhumanist philosophy, her concept for a whole body prosthetic, the future of Humanity Plus, and more.
